:: Jack's Canyon ::

OverView
  Jack’s Canyon is the spot to go sport climbing in Northern Arizona. Situated in a beautiful canyon where water has carved at the rock for eons, Jack’s Canyon offers vertical to wildly overhanging routes on compact stone. With a limestone/sandstone mix the majority of the climbing is characterized by steep, limestone pocket pulling with the comfort of sandstone. On vertical walls, the rock can be bubbly with edges and blocks.   If you want to climb at an outdoor rock gym, this is your place.

Weather
  The Weather is great year round with fall offering the best conditions. In the summer you’ll be chasing the shade with temperatures rising to the 90’s F. During the winter, temps can get down to freezing. Chase the sun and you’ll be climbing in T’shirt and shorts. Watch out for late spring and early summer floods. Many trips have been ended because of heavy rains causing the dry river bed to begin flowing. The water sometimes reaches the second bolt on certain sport routes.

Camping
The camping is free and unimproved at the canyon rim, where a 10 minute trail gets you to the routes. Please camp at obvious sites. A toilet has been provided by the Northern Arizona Climbers Coaliton. Please don't throw trash in the toilet. The town of Winslow is 40 minutes north of Jack’s Canyon and offers cheap hotels, showers and food for the more civilized climber

Directions
  Jack’s Canyon is located 30 miles south of Winslow, Arizona. From I-40 take Winslow exit 253 (N. Park Dr.) and turn south. Travel south on N. Park Drive to Second St.. Turn left onto Second St. Follow Second St. for a couple of blocks and then turn right at the light. This will place you on Highway 87 traveling south. Continue on Highway 87 until mile marker 313.7. Turn right onto a dirt road with a gate. Open the gate and then close the gate behind you. Follow the most obvious dirt "highway" through the flat desert until road ends at unimproved camping and Jack’s Canyon.

Ethics
  The Ethics at Jacks Canyon are best described as "loose".  Jacks Canyon has tons of bolts and very comfortable holds,  even the cracks in this canyon are bolted.  The rule at Jacks is to push your limits and HAVE FUN , period. Important:  As of 1999, the forest service has asked that first ascentionists do not place any new bolts in Jacks Canyon without the their approval.
