“I use this experience for a writing project as well as part of my character development program. Our experience in climbing gives us opportunities for great stories that show lots of ideas and voice (writing traits). Through encouragement, courage and determination students experience success in climbing. Later, during community circle time, we discuss the feelings we had while participating and relate those experiences to our future. We discuss how overcoming fears doing activities that involve “safe risks” (climbing with safety gear, adults, etc.) give us the courage to attempt new things in our lives that may at first appear difficult to accomplish.”
